Apprenticeships

If your industry has an Industry Training Organisation (ITO), you have the opportunity to take on an apprentice. Apprentices work in your business as paid employees while working towards a qualification and gaining practical experience.

Taking on an apprentice can benefit your business in several ways:

  • Increase workplace expertise
  • Upskill existing employees
  • Foster a training culture in the workplace
  • Provide apprentices with new skills and career opportunities
  • Introduce fresh knowledge and ideas to your business
  • Secure your business’s future by cultivating and preparing the right talent.

Apprenticeships are available to anyone over 16 interested in a career in your industry, with no upper age limit.

You can also apply for Apprenticeship Boost, a payment designed to support employers in retaining and taking on new apprentices.

This payment is directly made to employers, ensuring apprentices can continue earning while working towards their qualifications.

Apprenticeship Boost is available until the end of December 2023. For further details on Apprenticeship Boost and application instructions, please click on the link provided below.

Government help with training

To succeed in the New Zealand Apprenticeships scheme, actively engage in your apprentice’s training by agreeing on a plan with them and the relevant Industry Training Organisation (ITO). Ensure they work towards a recognized qualification.

Before proceeding, consult your ITO for guidance. Contact the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) for more insights into the New Zealand Apprenticeships scheme.
