The 0 dollar Habit That Grew My Business More Than Any Strategy Ever Did

We often think growth comes from scaling tactics, smarter systems, or the next big marketing strategy.

But after years of building, advising, and observing businesses across all stages, here’s the habit that quietly changed everything for me, more than any productivity hack or profit model:

Every week, I have one honest conversation with someone smarter than me.

This habit didn’t change my trajectory because it handed me magic solutions on a silver platter. It changed my trajectory because it gave me something no strategy can offer: perspective. When you’re buried deep inside your own business, operating day in and day out with your head down and your hands full, you lose the broader view. You become like a goldfish swimming in a bowl, thinking the water you’re in is the whole world. It’s not that you stop thinking critically; it’s that you stop questioning the water itself. That’s where these conversations come in. They pull you out of that bowl and help you see what you’re not seeing: your blind spots, your assumptions, your self-imposed ceilings. And often, they help you remember you’re not alone in this.

The Value of Unfiltered Insight Over More “Information”

In a world that glorifies knowledge acquisition, read more books, subscribe to more newsletters, consume more content, it’s easy to believe that the more input you take in, the more clarity you’ll gain. But clarity doesn’t come from more noise. It comes from deeper reflection. It comes from being asked better questions. And it comes from letting someone challenge your thinking in a way that self-help content and curated LinkedIn posts never will. The conversations I’ve had with clients, peers, mentors, and even brutally honest friends have often led to more meaningful breakthroughs than any high-dollar course or consultant ever could. They’ve helped me see not just where I’m going, but who I’m becoming in the process.

Sometimes, we need someone outside the business to say what we already know deep down but are afraid to admit. That our pricing is too low. That we’re hiding behind busyness. That we’re avoiding the thing we most need to do. These aren’t revolutionary insights. But they land differently when spoken out loud, especially by someone who sees your patterns more clearly than you do. Growth doesn’t just come from strategy. It comes from alignment. From being called forward. From being seen clearly and spoken to honestly by people who don’t need to sugarcoat anything.

Who I Talk To and Why It Matters

These aren’t always formal mentoring sessions. They’re not structured coaching calls. Sometimes they’re voice notes are swapped with a client. Sometimes it’s a phone call with a brutally honest mate who tells me what I don’t want to hear but need to.

Here’s the common thread: they’re real, respectful, and raw.

Some of my best insights have come from:

  • Fellow business owners navigating similar seasons
  • Industry veterans who’ve seen cycles I haven’t
  • Clients whose feedback challenged how I work
  • Friends outside my industry who brought fresh eyes to the table

It’s not about getting magic answers. It’s about getting out of your own head long enough to see things clearly again.

This Habit Costs Nothing, But It’s Worth Everything

We spend thousands on consultants, ads, and tools looking for leverage. Yet we overlook the leverage that lives in plain sight, the kind that comes from being in honest dialogue with people who help us think clearly, act braver, and lead better. This habit costs nothing but time and humility. It requires no software, no sign-up, no productivity hack. Just a willingness to show up, ask real questions, and be open to what comes next.

So if you’re looking for something that will move your business forward in a way that no funnel or framework can, start here. One honest conversation a week. That’s it. No pressure to have all the answers. Just the courage to seek better questions, and the humility to let someone else hold up the mirror.

You don’t need more information. You need more perspective. And that, more than anything else, is what has grown my business.

How to Build This Habit, and Actually Make It Stick

If you want to implement this yourself, here’s how to do it practically, not just once, but every week.

1. Choose the Right People

Look for people who:

  • Will be honest, not just agreeable
  • Understand your world, but aren’t stuck in it
  • You are ahead of me in some area: skill, mindset, or experience
  • You genuinely respect and are willing to learn from

This could be a fellow founder, mentor, client, past colleague, or even someone from a completely different industry who sees things differently.

Don’t overthink the title. Value comes from the insight, not the LinkedIn headline.

2. Reach Out With Intention, Not a Pitch

This isn’t networking. It’s not about selling, impressing, or asking for favours.

Just reach out with something simple:

“Hey, I’m carving out space each week to have one honest conversation with people I respect: about what’s really going on in business and life behind the scenes. Would you be open to catching up?”

Let the conversation be natural. Ask questions. Listen more than you talk. Respect their time. Don’t try to impress: just be real.

3. Create a Repeatable Rhythm

Schedule one conversation per week. That’s it.

It could be 30 minutes on Zoom, a walk-and-talk call, or a coffee. Whatever works for you and them.

Protect this time like you would a strategy session or financial review. Because it is a strategy session, you just don’t realise it until after the conversation.

Make it a standing habit in your calendar. Keep it light, keep it consistent.

4. Reflect After the Conversation

Take five minutes after each chat to jot down:

  • What shifted for you?
  • What challenged you?
  • What’s one thing you’ll act on?

This is where the ROI compounds: when you actually do something with the insight.

Even one idea, reframed belief, or course correction can be worth thousands in avoided mistakes or unlocked momentum.

5. Give Back Without Expecting Anything

Some of the most valuable conversations won’t come from “powerful” people: they’ll come from people who just get it. Show up curious. Be generous with your own insights, too.

And don’t keep score. Relationships compound over time, not through transactions, but through trust.

Conversations Build Businesses

Growth isn’t always found in strategy decks or spreadsheets. Sometimes, it’s found in a well-timed question, a mirror held up by someone brave enough to reflect the truth, or a simple reminder that you’re not the only one figuring it out as you go.

  • This habit costs $0.
  • Takes one hour a week.
  • And has done more for my business than any ad campaign or funnel ever has.

Try it this week. Reach out to someone you trust. Ask what’s really on their mind. Be curious. Be real. And see what happens when you stop trying to go it alone.
